We traveled a few hours from the comforts and relatively urban nature of Flagstaff past numerous roadside craft and novelty stands and miles of desolate desert to a small town called Kayenta. This city is surrounded by these massive rock formations that look like daggers that have been shoved out from inside the earth. It’s a crossroads in these parts and besides the fast food chains and gas stations there does not seem to be much in this town. Our destination is an acute care women’s shelter where women and sometimes their children are escaping recent violence. Video cameras, locked doors and a nondescript building protect these ladies from their attackers. One of our patients today is 21, still a child in so many ways, and she came to the shelter two days ago from a town nearly 60 miles away. Her family has been abusing her and the shelter is a refuge for not only her, but also a 3 year old son and an unborn child that is 4 months along. I think today is the first time in a long time that someone has asked her with pure sincerity what they can do to help her. She immediately opens a flood of tears, and only after reassurance that it’s ok to ask for help tells of her shoulder pain and difficulty sleeping. What is seemingly a small service, a few acupuncture needles and a homeopathic remedy, leaves our young patient with a smile on her face and a noticeable calmness. I think about her most of the ride home, her unborn child and so much potential in front of her. I realize that the shelter and the hope of her transitioning into more independence is what will save her from further abuse or neglect. I hope that she makes choices that are good for her and her children most of all, and I see now how the shelter has given her the opportunity to make those choices. I feel so lucky to add experiences like this to my education as Naturopathic medical student.–Dan Buxbaum, SCNM 4th year medical student
