“What a relief to have found a medical system that treaats the body as a whole. Naturopathy works to encourage the body to ameliorate or eliminate symptoms rather than suppressing those symptoms with drugs; it is a path to real health – and hope. Thanks to two naturopathic doctors, I feel healthier and better than I have for 20 years. Thank you.” – L. Quinn

For the past 10 years or so I have been experiencing a range of health issues. Though not life threatening in any way, they still interfered with my life. The most prevalent and inconvenient were extreme pain before, during and after menstruation. This also included long periods of extremely heavy bleeding every month. Also, since the age of 19 I have battled with horrible flare-ups of psoriasis. I’ve been “dealing” with both of these for about the same amount of time. I’ve visited many physicians and dermatologists, all of which practiced pretty much in the exact same way. It seemed to me looking back, that all we did, the physicians and I, was treat the symptoms. Yes, at times they would ease up or cease completely, but only for a short period of time. As the years would pass I realize now, I got to the point where I just started putting up with how I felt, no matter how bad it was because I truly didn’t think it would or could get better. Last August I experienced the worst period I’ve ever had. I was in extreme pain for weeks. It was so bad that all I could do was go to work. After work I would head straight home and either get in to bed or make a bed on the couch and lay there until the next day. I also bled, heavily, for over 3 weeks straight. I also had been dealing with a flare up of psoriasis, which had already been going on for about a year. My best friend had started to see Dr. Gowey a few weeks prior. She begged me to make an appointment with her. Brandie was already successful in the treatments my friend was receiving and she was raving about her. I was hesitant at first, mainly because I really didn’t want to see another doctor who would tell me the same story as I’ve heard before. At my first consult with Dr. Gowey she sat down with me and asked me to tell her everything that was bothering me. I did just that. I gave her my entire history in relation to my periods, let her check out my psoriasis and then we began talking about what may be causing my symptoms. The very first thing she suggested was that I was gluten intolerant. Now, at the time I had heard a little about this, but very, very little, so I was a bit taken aback. I was aware that it was a type of food intolerance but I could not understand how being intolerant to something I ingest could cause these health issues. Anyway, at this point I was willing to consider ANYTHING. She also surmised that the pain I was experiencing with menstruation was due to cysts which were caused by the possible gluten intolerance also known as Celiac disease. Dr. Gowey first wanted me to get an ultrasound ASAP to make sure there wasn’t anything life threatening happening and to also see if there were indeed cysts. The results came back fairly quick and unfortunately the ultrasound was negative.
At that point Dr. Gowey ordered a CT scan. Sure enough, cysts were found inside my ovaries. In all the years that I was seeing other doctors I had only one order an ultrasound, which also had a negative result but no other tests were ever ordered. I had been told in the past that I probably had cysts, but nothing was ever done to actually confirm this. Dr. Gowey also had blood tests done that confirmed that I am gluten intolerant and that I have been all my life. Once it was obvious what we were dealing with Dr. Gowey began me on a regimen of herbs and acupuncture. I also had to make the conscious decision to give up gluten, which is wheat, barley and rye. Easier said than done was a bit of an understatement at that time. It took me a while to buckle down but eventually I did. It’s been about 5 months since I’ve been focusing on my diet and keeping it as gluten free as possible. I’ve also been taking my herbs daily and visiting Dr. Gowey for acupuncture. As of this moment in time my menstrual symptoms have eased CONSIDERABLY. When I look at my skin today, my psoriasis is pretty much gone. All that is left is a little scarring which will more than likely clear over time. Dr. Gowey did for me in five months what no one else could do over a ten year period. The way I feel today is the way I wish I could have felt in my early twenties. I am truly thankful that I was directed to her, that she was able to help, but most of all that she listened and treated me and not my symptoms. I can’t count the number of people who have noticed the change in me. I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time, I have more energy than I’ve had in years, if ever. I also experienced some weight loss because of the change in diet and just being healthier. That alone speaks volumes. What girl doesn’t like being able to get rid of her fat jeans and slip in to her skinny jeans? I cannot thank Dr. Gowey enough for what she has done for me. I feel like a new person and no words can ever be enough to express just how grateful I am. I recommend her to everyone I know and rave about her when people ask who has helped me. I don’t know why I went so long feeling the way I did, but I am so happy that I don’t have to ever feel that way again. Thank you with all my heart Brandie!~ Jessica Westling
